No, I didn't go back in time with two 80s rockstar wannabe's!
Since I bitch a lot here, I'm going to take this opportunity to talk about my best day ever yesterday!
Memorial Day Weekend - day off. Awesomeness is already there!
Reichelt let me borrow her aunt's bike so I could do this - PROPS!
Andrew and I woke up around 10am - rather, I made us get out of bed close to 10:30 because it was late already! We putzed around, put air in our bike tires, found our helmets, I packed an "everything" bag and we were off! Breakfast at Einstein/Starbucks (delicious and carbolicious) - no rush, not a long wait, not too much sun. Nice.
Then we were really off! Taking the bikes down 16th to the Rock Creek Parkway - closed to automobiles on weekends and mostly downhill! I'm pretty sure I coasted almost all the way down to the zoo. Megan's bike is a little big for me (I'm short!) but I made it work - the pedals were fine, but stopping was an issue! We biked all the way to the Kennedy Center (beautiful, by the way) under trees, smelling freshness, wonderful views. Seeing the water at the KC I said 'let's go to the Tidal Basin!'
So we did! It's only $10 for a 2-seater for 1 hour. And that hour can go pretty fast when you're just pedaling and relaxing! We saw goslings and ducklings and a waterbird with an impressive wingspan! We pedaled close enough to see the FDR Memorial's waterfalls and took some great pics of the Washington and Jefferson. At about the 45 minute mark, the clouds had started to gather so we pedaled in and decided to just head for Union Station for lunch.
On the way there we rode up the Mall to avoid the Memorial Day Parade road blocks, but managed to find where they'd lined everyone up! We got to see the parade (most of it) without having to stand on the sidelines! And we had great views of the Smiths' and the Capitol! I got us to Union, because I am awesomeness, and we ate at America (which is a usual for us.) Our service was EXCELLENT (ask for Eric), and we tried some new things. Then we got our bikes on the metro to come home.
Around Fort Totten I saw the lightning and the black clouds over the north - where we were headed. No worries. If we get wet - we get wet! We were already still a little sweaty and very much looking forward to a shower! We biked up to our apartment from the metro in the driving rain (more fun than it sounds!) and got changed and dressed. At this point it's only 4pm, still.
We picked John up from the hospitol (I'll let him tell it, it's nothing too serious!) and went to Rita's for italian icee goodness! Strawberry Maragrita - I'm tellin' you. Mmmmm want more... Anyway, then we walked around Target just to look, came home and watched some more How I Met Your Mother, the boys went out for a drink, and Alie and I ended up joining them too late, and early(ish) to bed.
Perfect Day. Want more of them. :)
Andrew and I plan to try to make biking a regular weekend thing for us. And we're both giving up soda cold turkey. Just water, juice, and coffee (with skim) for us, please! Guess this means I'll need a 3rd bike!
