With Nice Weather Comes Some Resolution

Hello All!

It's been a nice few days away from the show - and before I dive back in for the weekend, I wanted to update on the "sitch."

Not that it's changed, mind you, but I got to talk to Kakerley.

Last night I met up with Angelyn on campus to drop off her letters'o'recommendation. (Adult, much?) Anyway, she told me she had rehearsal with Kathleen, so I tagged along to Hartke to see whom I could see, and hopefully catch Kathleen. Because I never emailed or called her despite my last email - and I know my opinion is valued, too.

When she turned the corner, she immediately launched into it - we both needed to make sure the other heard our side! I told her that, yeah, I was frustrated with the line-thing, but I consider it my job as an actor to do what I've rehearsed to do, and trust that when my director tells me it flies by - it DOES. :-/

However, the actor in question was already well aware of his situation. Minor cuts had been made when it first became apparent. He even asked Kathleen to yell at him during tech week, which she outright refused to do. "I can be a dragon, but I'm not going to yell at someone who knows they're doing something wrong!" I know that that was one of my initial arguments, and I see now, knowing that, that Kathleen handled the situation correctly. We shoulnd't have needed that scene to play out with him being publicly reprimanded - if anything we might have even less morale.

Apparently, the actor who called her in the first place said two things which struck Kathleen: 1) the actors feel un-appreciated in this situation, and 2) it's de-moralizing to be in a "bad show." Response 1) "I'm not even going to be horrified about that," said Kathleen, she asked us every day during tech, and even pulled people aside to ask "do you have any problems?" and ALWAYS always encouraged us to call or email her if we did. I know I called her as soon as I realized Leukemia wasn't working in rehearsal - and it got fixed! Response 2) This is what made Kathleen see that she wasn't going to be able to say, you know, it's open - it's not my problem anymore - deal with it. When the cast attitude is that intensely low she felt she needed to step in and do something.

That something was to make cuts. I assured her that the bit I lost would not be missed so much by me. It even would have made the suggestion list, had I made one. I assured Kathleen that it is not a bad show, but I can agree that it's a bit disheartening to be in a show with low cast morale. It made Red Noses so hard to do week after week - not only because the audience sucked, but because there was so much negativity backstage!

I only wish my parents could have seen the uncut show. Ah well.

Head down - shoulders up - chin out. It's time to Rock and Roll!
